Know Thyself, Love Thsyelf, Be Thyself

Know Thyself, Love Thsyelf, Be Thysel – Article for Foundr Magazine (formerly Key to Success Magazine)

“When the voice and the vision on the inside is louder and more profound than all the opinions on the outside. That’s when you master your life. That’s the key to achievement” – Dr John Demartini

The quote above is just one of the countless pearls of wisdom master communicator Dr John Demartini shares with us in this exclusive Key To Success™ interview. He doesn’t stop there however. Covering a wide range of topics, including everything from his early life story, to how to live a purpose filled life, the keys to financial independence, to his thoughts on success – and the lack of existence of the terminology in his vernacular. Though the quantity of the wisdom he manages to pack into this short interview is impressive it is the quality of it that stands out.

Anybody who hears the man speak gets a sense of being in the presence of a genius, someone who really knows what they’re on about. The result of thirty plus years of studying and teaching Universal laws, principles of human achievement, healing, theology, and the lives and works of all the great mind’s in history plus much more.

It wasn’t always this way however. As a child Demartini was told by doctors that he’d never be able to walk. After being born with both his foot and hand turned in, and having to wear braces for them during his early life. He also had extreme difficulty keeping up with his classmates at school where he carried a severe speech impediment and was eventually diagnosed with dyslexia, while told by his teacher that “he’d never amount to anything, and won’t be able to read, write or communicate properly” demoted to the ‘special’ class, and made to wear a dunce cap, “because he was stupid.” He now not only walks – and runs – but travels the world, giving four hundred speeches a year on topics ranging from financial independence, to living a purpose filled, empowered life, visionary leadership, maximizing human potential, as well as being a much sought after business consultant, and self-made millionaire; and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

In 1982 he also started The Demartini Institute – “The Demartini Institute is dedicated to exploring and expanding human awareness and potential with a mission to inspire men, women and children across the world to become purposeful and disciplined masters of themselves and dedicated, inspired leaders of others.” His core message and teachings have reached over 3.1 Billion people – yes just shy of 50% of the entire population – and he’s travelled almost the entire globe, racking up a million frequent flyer miles along the way, teaching and giving conferences. He currently lives upon The World, the largest privately owned residential yacht in the world, which is also home to the richest woman in the world Gina Rinehart.

Touching on the idea of financial independence Demartini notes that every time he does a conference he asks those in attendance “who here would like to become financially independent?” to which everyone raises their hand. When he then asks “how many of you here are financially independent?” nearly everyone puts their hand back down. In reality only about three out of every thousand people will go onto actualizing that reality. He goes on to share the six things which people need to understand and place value on in order to achieve financial independence.

Dr Demartini’s core philosophy is conveyed succinctly and eloquently and virtually every time he opens his mouth to speak metaphorical gold nuggets begin flowing forth. For instance when asked about the natural comparisons that many of us make with one another he points out that:

“We’re not here to compare ourselves to other people; we’re here to compare ourselves to our own vision”

Success is an incredibly subjective experience. Ask one hundred people “can you define success?” and you may well receive just as many varying responses. Success; Demartini explains, will be based upon an individual’s highest values, intentions, their attentions and the congruency between all three.

“Success is the congruency between intentions, attentions and highest values”

John’s story is a genuine “hero’s journey” and can inspire us all, no matter what position; financially, mentally, emotionally, physically, geographically or otherwise we may currently find ourselves in. While it’s true that this story revolves around one man’s amazing ability to turn his life around and all the incredible good he shares with the world. It is also true, and more importantly so that whatever traits we see in another, we also contain within ourselves. The moment we recognize that we each have in us the power to change our circumstances, habits, choices, actions, and ultimately our lives, is the very moment we begin change the world. Inspiring others in the process as we become more and more aware of our own values as well as those of others.

We asked John in essence to sum up “What is the Key to Success?” as in what’s the common thread that weaves between individuals who have high levels of personal achievement and success? His answer:

“They’re being themselves”

The more you allow yourself to be yourself and organize your life to do more of the things YOU really love to do, the more successful you will be. So simple yet so immensely profound.

Echoing the old wisdom of the Delphic Oracle – “Know thyself, Love thyself and Be thyself” Demartini reminds us here how simple it can be.

Just be yourself.
